

I use it for most of the libraries and open source packages that I need on macOS. Also if you have advanced audio use-cases, take a look at macOS's builtin utility "Audio MIDI Setup". A famous and older alternative is Soundflower.

I have defined an alias for it (see my zsh config below)Ī virtual audio driver to forward audio between apps. This is a command-line download utility with support for HTTP/FTP/BitTorrent and multiple-connection downloads. I have to admit, I don’t use all the features of this app, and it’s something I have to dedicate some time to learn. Take a look at its website to get to know all its features. You launch it by a shortcut and it appears as a search bar in the screen: Think of it as a more-powerful Spotlight search bar, with the power of other tools (like Automator) combined, plus more configuration and extensions. Alfred is an application launcher which provides the user with a one-stop-shop for launching apps, searching the computer and Internet, automate repetitive tasks, run commands, control the computer, etc. This one probably does not need an introduction. Browser plug-ins (well, this one is not macOS specific).

During the past few years, I have observed that many friends and colleagues (even more technical ones) are not using the full potential of their MacBooks (and iMacs). I switched from Windows/Linux to macOS in 2012 and have been using it as my main OS ever since (it was called "OS X" back then).
